History of Indigenous Research and Data Sovereignty
Session Description:
This session explores the history of research involving Indigenous peoples, including how colonial approaches to research have contributed to harm, mistrust, and misuse of Indigenous knowledge and data. Participants will examine the shift toward Indigenous self-determination in research and learn about Indigenous data sovereignty principles, including ownership, control, access, and possession. The session emphasizes ethical engagement, respect for Indigenous governance, and the responsibilities of researchers and organizations working with Indigenous data within mainstream systems.
